Avance - El Paso to Hold Fundraiser to Help Educate El Paso Families

Local Group Aims to End Cycle of Poverty

Monday, January 30, 2012 - 3:16pm

EL PASO - One in every four El Pasoans is considered food insecure; thousands of kids in our community drop out of school each year-- these are facts. But, one group is working to make things better for hundreds of families in our area, and they need your help.

Avance – El Paso aims to help young families break the cycle of poverty.

"We serve 20 schools within the El Paso area. Mainly, we work with the school districts to identify the schools that are most at-risk and have the highest economically disadvantaged children,” said Taylo Moreno, Executive Director of Avance – El Paso.

"We have a parenting curriculum where we help teach parents to be better parents. It really is a how-to on the developmental needs of a child,” said Moreno.

Each year, Avance – El Paso holds an event called Toma Mi Corazon. It's a fundraiser to raise money, to help educate El Paso families.

The event will auction off some hearts made by local artists.

"We hope that any El Pasoan can come and purchase one of these hearts,” said Moreno.

But, that's not all you can score if you attend Toma Mi Corazon.

"We're going to feature a trip for 8 to Bali. We have tickets to the masters for a tournament day play as well as private jet service from here to Horseshoe Bay as well as a stay at Horseshoe Bay Resort,” stated Moreno.

Moreno said the event and Avance – El Paso are important, because the kids participating in the program do well in school.

"Kids are out-scoring their peers both here in the region and across the state on the TAKS score by at least 10 percent,” said Moreno.

With community support, Moreno adds that Avance – El Paso can have a positive impact on children who need help.

"Last year, we were able to help over 650 families...If we meet our goal, we hope that next year, we'll be able to add additional sites and be able to help more families,” said Moreno.

The 11th annual Toma Mi Corazon will be held Wednesday, February 8th at 6 p.m. at the Camino Real Hotel. Tickets are $25; you can purchase them here: http://tmc2012.eventbrite.com/
