AH-64 'Apache' startles drivers on NM404
Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - 8:57am
Chaparral, NM — Drivers on the Anthony Gap, (NM404) were shocked to find an Army attack helicopter on the side of the road Tuesday Morning.
The AH-64 Apache landed overnight, and by daybreak Tuesday morning drivers spoted the chopper on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes, approaching Chaparral.
Our L4N crew reports that military crews are on scene investigating and that traffic is flowing slowly. There are no reported injuries.
Below is a statement from Ft. Bliss on the incident:
"Fort Bliss Helicopter Makes Precautionary Landing
A Fort Bliss helicopter made a precautionary landing near Anthony Gap on Highway 404 Monday evening after observing an in-flight warning light.
An AH-64 Apache helicopter, a twin-engine attack helicopter routinely used in support of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, landed after the pilots observed the warning light during a training flight.
The pilots landed the aircraft without incident to themselves or the helicopter, and assessed the issue could not be fixed due to darkness.
Fort Bliss Soldiers secured the sight overnight.
Aviation maintenance personnel arrived early Tuesday morning to assess the situation and begin repairs on the aircraft."
