El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Unhealthy levels of lead, arsenic, and mercury may be putting the health of several West El Paso residents at risk, according to a new soil study conducted in and around the site of the ASARCO smelter.
The Calavera neighborhood, just west of the plant, was one of 10 areas where soil samples were taken.
High levels of all three toxins were found in the area.
The 79 page report was paid for by the ASARCO Custodial Trust and examined 10 areas surrounding the ASARCO site.
Experts said long exposure to substances like arsenic, lead, and mercury can lead to serious illnesses including lead poisoning.
