The Artspace El Paso project cleared a major hurdle Thursday afternoon at the Texas Capitol in Austin.

The project was born six years ago as a joint project between the El Paso Community Foundation and the City of El Paso. The partnership aims to build 51 affordable apartments for artists in the location of the old El Paso Saddleblanket location, 601 N. Oregon St.

The building will consist of 7,500 square feet of multi-purpose nonprofit space and six commercial spaces for creative business.

The Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs approved 80% of the project's funding on Thursday, clearing the way for the project to be built in Downtown El Paso.
