El Paso police have made an arrest in what they said is the city’s latest murder. Thursday, they said they were called to an apartment at 4430 Wyoming in central El Paso around 10 a.m. Police said a neighbor heard a woman screaming and crying in Spanish “no, don’t hit me” for 30 minutes. When officers got there they said Jesus Chavez, 51 opened the door and asked officers what they wanted before closing it. Officers said a short time later, Chavez’ daughter showed up saying she had spoken to him minutes before 10 a.m. when he told her in Spanish, “come here I am going to die” and “I did something very bad.”

When the daughter opened the blinds to get her father to open the door police said she said there was blood on the floor.  The officer then kicked in the wooden door and found Laura Lara, 51 lying on the bed covered in blood. They said Chavez was found in the bathroom also covered in blood. Officers said Lara had a large cut to the side of her head, bruised and swollen eyes.

Police said Chavez used an aluminum bat to beat Lara who they identified as his cousin and girlfriend. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital where they said she died Sunday from blunt force trauma to the head.
Chavez who they said had self-inflicted wounds was taken to the hospital and was arrested following his release.

He’s now charged with murder and is being held in jail on a $1 million bond.
Officers said on the bed they noticed in envelope that in Spanish read, “I’m going to love you forever.”
