ANTHONY, N.M. — Town of Anthony trustees held a special meeting to discuss the future of their town clerk Friday afternoon, but were unable to conduct any business due to overcrowding.
The meeting was called for by three trustees and came as a surprise to Clerk Lisa Rascon.
"We had complaints," said Trustee Pilar Madrid when asked about the reason for calling the meeting.
Rascon has been employed by the small New Mexico town for about three months.
Mayor Arnulfo Castaneda said he recently heard concerns about the timeliness with meeting minutes.
"These concerns were brought up to me two weeks ago," Castaneda said.
When town leaders were going to discuss her future in open session, the meeting came to a halt.
"Our board room was over capacity so because of fire issues and things like that, the meeting had to be stopped," Castaneda said.
Trustees said they typically don't see large crowds during meetings but Madrid said the overcrowding was done intentionally.
"I think the purpose was so the building would be overcrowded and they would have to stop the meeting," Madrid said.
It's possible the 50 person capacity limit was exceeded by members from the Border Network of Human Rights looking to address council on a separate issue not involving the clerk's position.
For fear of violating the Open Meetings Act, Mayor Castaneda adjourned the meeting with no action taking place.
Trustees will meet next Wednesday for their regularly scheduled meeting.
Discussion on the town clerk is not on that agenda but could be added in.
