In less than a month, the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley has taken in 38 Boxers and Boxer-mix dogs, an unusually high number for the shelter. In an effort to find them new homes, the shelter is reaching out to the public for help.
“We can’t explain the recent spike in this particular breed,” said shelter director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, “but we are still operating over capacity. In order to save these dogs, we need to get the word out about adoptions. We’re also working with rescues locally and throughout the southwest that are able to take them in.”
The shelter makes every alternative to euthanasia, according to Vesco-Mock, but she advises that the best prevention is still spaying and neutering your pets.
“We just can’t stress that enough,” Vesco-Mock said.
