Analyst: Zetas Gang Leader's Death Unlikely to Cause Gang's Downfall

The apparent death of Zetas gang leader Heriberto Lazcano on Sunday is unlikely to bring about the downfall of the organization, according to a security analyst.

Mexico's navy said there was strong evidence that Lazcano and another alleged Zetas member had been killed in a fire fight with Marines Sunday.

Hours after the killing gunmen snatched Lazcano's remains from a funeral home.

Mexican security analyst Alberto Islas said the Zetas will exist as long as there is demand for the illicit goods and services the gang provides.

Islas said while the death is a victory for Mexican authorities, it will likely trigger a bloody fight for the areas dominated by the Zetas.

He also said the failure to properly secure the body shows a lack of coordination on the part of the federal government.
