Doña Ana County, NM (KDBC) — Deputies with Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 28-year-old woman from Las Cruces who was allegedly trespassing onto her mother-in-law's property to take back her own belongings and also to reportedly sell a stolen above-ground swimming pool.
Laura Elizabeth Maestas, 28, was arrested after a neighbor called 911 to report suspicious activity at a home in the 5200 block of Comanche Trail.
According to court documents, Maestas was in the company of four other individuals who believed they were going to the property to help Maestas complete the sale of an above-ground pool that was left at the house on Comanche Trail.
Another witness at the scene told investigators the above-ground pool never belonged to the homeowner, but had been reportedly stolen from a local home improvement store by the homeowner's son, who is currently detained at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on an unrelated matter.
Maestas also removed an air conditioner from the window the home and went inside to take a high-chair and other belongings that Maestas said were hers.
The owner of the property said that the property has been vacant since October 2013, and the locks had been changed. The owner told authorities that Maestas didn't have keys to the home or permission to take or sell anything from the home.
The homeowner couldn't remember where the above-ground pool came from, and she couldn't produce a receipt for the pool.
Maestas was arrested and charged with breaking and entering and was taken to the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond. At the time of her arrest, she had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear that carried a cash only bond of $367.00.
A search of Maestas' criminal history revealed that she was arrested in February after writing several fraudulent checks at an area Pic Quick store.
Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators say that all witnesses cooperated with authorities in this case and no additional charges will be filed in connection with this case.
