LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Things heated up a bit in Las Cruces Sunday afternoon with the 5th Annual Las Cruces Salsa Festival in downtown.
Hundreds showed up to taste 19 of the best salsas from area salsa-makers.
"It can't burn my tongue to where I can't get rid of it with a chip or two," said D.K. Evans on how spicy he likes his salsa.
Evans said he tasted all 19 salsas and Moldoado's Salsa stood out for the salsa fan.
"Jalapenos a little bit a of garlic and some chile de arbor," Christopher Maldonado said of his recipe.
Maldonado developed his recipe in 1982 that is sweet and delivers a kick at the same time.
He's now one of the local vendors selling his product at the Saturday Farmer's Market.
"The more you eat it the hotter it gets and the more you wanna eat," Maldonado said.
Bertha Lujan, another salsa fan, said Saenz Gordita's salsa is one of her favorites.
"Definitely home made and not too hot," she said. "It delicious salsa."
The well-established restaurant's recipe is a family secret.
"It's been passed down from my grandmother to my mom now down to us," said Albert Guerra of Saenz Gorditas.
Some of the salsa-makers went through at least 15 gallons of their product battling for fan votes as the best.
The Las Cruces Downtown Partnership hosting the festival is hoping Main Street is the real winner.
"When we have festivals like this people that are looking to open businesses say downtown is where I want to open my business because we have an organization that promotes the street," said Executive Director Carrie LaTour.
