EL PASO, Texas (KDBC) — More than $250,000 has been paid back to the City of El Paso through restitution payments.
Internal auditors found over several years cases of questionable expenses.
One instance, two former city employees and an unnamed company owner contracted to maintain the city's garbage trucks were ordered to pay back $223,000 for services not rendered.
That money was returned to the Environmental Services Dept.
A former Parks and Rec employee found guilty of taking $5,000 from the Leo Cancellare pool recently paid it back.
El Paso Police officers had to pay back more than $30,000 of overtime pay that was unauthorized.
City auditors say these kinds of findings don't happen overnight.
"It's very difficult to prove. We have to do it by analytics. And we use a very sophisticated auditing software and good ole fashioned common sense and number crunching," said city Chief Internal Auditor Edmundo Calderon.
The office conducts about 30 audits a year, with approval of city council members.
Those audits can be found on their website.
