2012: Worst Wildfire Season in New Mexico's History

Friday, December 28, 2012 - 5:25pm

It's now official. This summer's wildfire season in New Mexico was the biggest in the state's history. The largest of the fires was the Whitewater Baldy Complex Fire, which burned for more than a month, charring about 300,000 acres of land in the Gila National Forest. Then there was the Little Bear Fire which destroyed 242 homes and burned almost 50,000 acres near Ruidoso. More than nine million acres of land burned in the Western United States this year. The one bit of good news? Texas saw fewer fires in 2012 than in 2011.
