El Paso, TX (KDBC) — El Paso Police have released additional information in a serious crash on I-10 between Sunland Park and Executive that snarled traffic for hours overnight.
The crash happened around 8:43 p.m. Monday night on I-10 east at mile marker 14.5. Police say 17-year-old Michael Chaparro was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon at a high rate of speed eastbound on I-10 when he almost crashed into a guardrail.
Police say that Chaparro then overcorrected the Yukon, causing him to lose control and slide across the lanes of traffic. As a result, 20-year-old Roberto Varela was ejected to the Yukon. Varela was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries.
STI determined that speed and driver distraction are factors in the collision. Chaparro and another passenger, 23-year-old Sergio Garcia were not injured in the crash.
At this time, no charges have been filed against Chaparro.
