2 White Sands Missile Range-based soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Two White Sands Missile Range-based soldiers were killed last week in Afganistan.

According to the Department of Defense, Spc. Kenneth Clifford Alvarez, 23, of Santa Maria, Calif., and Pvt. Jonathon Michael Dean Hostetter, 20, of Humphreys, Mo. died Aug. 23 in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan.

Both soldiers were assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

Memorial services for both fallen soldiers are pending.

Defense Department officials say Alvarez and Hostetter died from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

Pvt. Hostetter deployed to Afghanistan to join the 40th MAC in April 2013. This was his first deployment. He is survived by his wife.

Spc. Alvarez was assigned to the 2nd Engineer Battalion at WSMR. Upon arrival, he requested to join the 40th MAC in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife and child.
