El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — Valentine's Day is just another day on the job for DJ Niel Mac.
The equipment is unloaded, the sound check complete.
But that's where the ordinary ends. You see, DJ Niel Mac is just 10 years-old.
"I love making people dance and people have a good time and coming up to me saying, wow, you're an amazing DJ," said Niel.
But that's to not to say this pre-teen doesn't know his stuff.
Niel McLelland first got interested in mixin' music after attending the Sun City music fest three years ago. He's been hooked ever since. While he's grown, so has his equipment.
"He's got the full light show and sound equipment," explained his father Marvin McLellan.
He now perform in places like Vegas and Scottsdale.
Not bad for a kid who wouldn't otherwise even be allowed in the clubs where he performs.
"He's always enjoyed music even since he was a baby, even when I was pregnant I would play music for him and he enjoyed it back then," said his mother Sharon McLellan.
Niel is now homeschooled. This is sort of like a class assignment.
"We push him. I'm home during the week and I'm practice, practice, practice," said Sharon.
And practice he does, typically 2 to 3 hours a night.
"Being a DJ isn't just about mixing songs. It's about knowing key notes and knowing anything a violinist would know or a pianist would know," said Niel.
Dedication paying off, for a young kid set on making it to the top, one beat at a time.
"He's the best in the country," said Marvin.
Niel's parents travel to all of his gigs, partly out of necessity, since he's still several years away from being able to drive.
