Trash Problems in Sunland Park

Thursday, August 9, 2012 - 20:20

Parts of Sunland Park are looking better this week than last. Some residents have been complaining about the city's failure to pick up trash, saying garbage didn't get collected in some neighborhoods last week. Trash overflowed and spilled onto several streets. Those bins are now finally empty. Mayor Javier Perea says the problem was two-fold. Several garbage trucks broke down, and the city also had to make big cuts to the public works department to try and shore up a deficit.

"The trash collection I know has been a problem in the past. I don't anticipate it to be a problem anymore. Just give us a little time and we'll make sure trash is picked up on time every single day," said Perea.

Mayor Perea says the city council has voted to outsource trash collection moving forward. In the short term, the city is also renting garbage trucks from the county.
