Border Patrol Agents Return Home

posted by Robert Boyd, KDBC 4 News

The two El Paso Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug smuggler and covering it up returned home to El Paso Tuesday.

Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean each had their sentences of more than 10 years commuted earlier this year. Former President George W. Bush made the decision the day before his final day in office.

Their commutation becomes effective March 20th. Both will serve out the remainder of their sentences in home confinement.

Compean was greeted at the airport by family, friends and plenty of media. Compean is not allowed to speak to the media while under house arrest, but his wife said she was overjoyed to have him back at home after he spent almost two years in prison.

"I told myself the next time I was going to cry they would be tears of joy," said Patty Compean. The family didn't know how they were going to spend the next couple days, but they did plan to eat a steak dinner at home on Tuesday.

Compean and Ramos are also awaiting their case to be heard by the Supreme Court in hopes all charges are cleared.
